The University of Maine men’s hockey program has added some grit for next season.

Lem Randall, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound center and right wing who notched 101 points and a team-high 209 penalty minutes for the OCN Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, has verbally committed to attend Maine in the fall on a scholarship.

The 21-year-old Randall scored 37 goals and added 64 assists in 63 games to finish sixth in the league in scoring. He had 16 power-play goals and three shorthanded goals. He is from Snow Lake, Manitoba.

Maine graduated two of its most physical forwards in left wingers Brent Shepheard and Josh Soares.

“Lem is a very physical player. He’s a power forward. If he can’t go around you, he’ll go through you,” said OCN coach/general manager Doug Hedley. “He was one of our leaders. He’s a character player who will put his body in front of pucks.”

Hedley said the team gives out a Human Wrecking Ball Award to the player who lands the fiercest hits during the course of the season and Randall has won the award the last two seasons.

Hedley considers Randall a solid, two-way player who can play on the power play and the penalty kill.

“He has better-than-average hands and a good shot. He sees the ice well,” said Hedley. “He’s a hardworking kid with a great attitude. I think he’ll be a tremendous college player.”

Randall’s coming to Maine is dependent upon his gaining admission to the school and meeting NCAA Clearinghouse standards.
