BREWER – Brewer Youth Theatre will present the musical comedy “Wonderful Town,” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 17-19, at Brewer Middle School.
The story of two sisters from Ohio who move to New York City in 1935, “Wonderful Town” was written by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov with music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The show made its debut on Broadway in 1953 starring Rosalind Russell and Edie Adams, and was revived in 2003 with a cast led by Donna Murphy.
Brewer Youth Theatre’s production features Erika Cote as Ruth, the aspiring writer, and Lexi Marceron as her younger sister, Eileen, who hopes to make her name as an actress.
Matt McLaughlin plays magazine editor Robert Baker, Anthony Severance is newspaperman Chick Clark, and Jamie Bartol portrays Frank Lippencott, the local Walgreens manager. Elysa Woodhead and Matt Adams play neighbor Helen, and her pro football-playing boyfriend, Wreck.
Nearly 40 Brewer high school and middle school students and special guests from Bangor complete the cast.
The show is directed by Rich Kimball and Abby Hayward, with musical direction by Clayton Smith. Set design is by pupils Lexi Marceron and Jamie Bartol; lighting design by senior Lucas Simmons and artwork by cast member Woodhead. Marcia Bartol and Sandy Hodgins are the costumers. The set was built by Jim Bartol.
