Two Bangor men, one of whom told police they had rifled through as many as 100 unlocked vehicles in Bangor Thursday night and into Friday morning, found themselves in jail after they were caught red-handed by a Buck Street resident, according to Bangor police.
Officers Douglas Smith, David Bushey, Wade Betters, Brandon Vafiades and Lt. Jeff Millard responded to a complaint around 2:30 a.m. Friday from a man who said two strangers were searching through his car in the parking area of his apartment building.
The officers split up to search and Lt. Millard eventually caught up to the two suspects on 3rd Street.
Shawn Braley, 25, and Daniel Rogerson, 22, both denied involvement. But both were on bail with conditions for random searches and alcohol and drug tests, so police looked through a white backpack Rogerson was wearing.
They found credit cards and checkbooks that belonged to other individuals, a Walkman, coupons and change, according to the police report.
Rogerson then reportedly told an officer that he and Braley had looked through cars “all over the place,” and he couldn’t remember which items belonged to which vehicles.
When the officer asked how many vehicles they had tried to burglarize, Rogerson said he had lost count, but the number was probably around 100, the report stated.
Rogerson told police that they didn’t need to break into the vehicles because all their doors were unlocked, according to the report.
Braley and Rogerson were arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Both men were charged with violation of conditional release and burglary to motor vehicles. (Nick McCrea, BDN)
Police are investigating the reported theft of a checkbook from a Dexter business. Someone forced open a back door Wednesday night or Thursday morning to the Rand Hill store on Main Street and it appears the only thing they took was a checkbook, Dexter Police Chief Art Roy said Thursday.
A tracking dog and his handler from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department provided some leads to the theft which is under investigation. (Diana Bowley, BDN)
