River levels dropping in Somerset

SKOWHEGAN – Somerset County Emergency Management Director Robert Higgins said that river levels throughout the county were dropping Friday.

“The Kennebec was at 36,800 cubic feet per second at noon today, down from 43,000 cfs Thursday,” he said.

He said flood stage for the Kennebec River is 33,000 cfs.

“We are expecting 1 to 4 inches of rain between now and [Saturday],” he said, “but the heaviest will be in coastal areas.”

Higgins said the lightest rain will be in the mountains, which is the area that feeds Somerset’s rivers. “The rain is expected to stop at midday,” he said.

“We will continue to watch and monitor but I don’t expect any problems,” he said.
