SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Bangor native Jesse Speirs started Saturday’s final round of the NCAA Division I Golf Championships Central Regional tied for 80th individually, but moved up 17 spots before the day was over.
The successful season ended short of a championship round appearance as Speirs shot a 5-over-par 77 on the final day for a three-day total of 234 at the Rich Harvest Farms Course.
Speirs’ Texas Christian University Horned Frogs finished 23rd out of 27 teams with a 957 (22 over). The top 10 teams in the NCAA Central Regional advance to the national championship tournament July 6-9.
The Horned Frogs, who were seeded ninth going into the regional, opened up with their worst round of the tournament Thursday at 332, but cut things down to 315 Friday and then 310 Saturday.
Speirs, a sophomore at TCU, started out with a 76 Thursday before carding an 81 Friday. He finished tied with eight other golfers for 63rd individually.
