Sophomores Christine Ordway from Waynflete of Portland and Mike Hill from Mount Ararat of Topsham have earned the No. 1 seeds for the high school tennis state singles tournament that continues at the Wallach Tennis Complex on the campus of Bates College in Lewiston.
Regional qualifying rounds were held on May 12 at several locations around the state, and final seedings for the tournament fields were determined by Maine Principals’ Association tennis officials during a meeting Saturday at Augusta.
While both top seeds are young, they are veterans. Ordway is the defending girls’ singles champion, while Hill reached the boys’ championship match last year before bowing to two-time state champion Eliot Potvin of Hampden Academy.
Potvin, a senior, is not back to defend his title, as he is training independently in Massachusetts this year and already has accepted a partial scholarship to continue his playing career at Georgia Tech next season.
Western Maine players dominated the seedings on the boys side, as Hill is one of just two representatives among the eight seeds from an Eastern Maine school. The other is sixth-seeded Mike Butler of Lewiston.
Seeded behind Hill are 2006 semifinalist Neall Oliver of Deering of Portland, Sam Hyland and Chris Morrison of Falmouth, Mike Von Vogt of Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Butler, Devin Van Dyke of Waynflete and Will Hall of Cape Elizabeth.
Hill will play his first match Friday in the Round of 32 against the winner of the match between Patrick Savage of Caribou and Nicholas Tolman of Scarborough.
Ordway will open the defense of her title against the winner of the Round of 40 match between Miranda Grant of Ellsworth and Susan Barton of York.
Seeded behind Ordway are 2006 semifinalists Chantalle Lavertu of Lewiston and Hallsey Leighton of Cheverus (who played for Falmouth last year), Deahna Giguere of Messalonskee of Oakland, Amanda Slack of Cape Elizabeth, Lauren Coupal of York, Erin Flynn of John Bapst (a quarterfinalist in 2006), and Casey Corriveau of Caribou.
Thirty-one schools are represented in the girls field, with Lewiston leading the way with three players. Seven other schools – Hermon, Presque Isle, Cheverus, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, York and Catherine McAuley of Portland – have two players each competing.
The boys field also includes players from 31 schools, with Caribou and Falmouth each represented by three players. Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, Mount Ararat, Lewiston and Cape Elizabeth each will send two players to the Round of 40 play-down.
Two rounds of competition will be held both Friday and Saturday, with the Rounds of 40 and 32 on Friday and the Round of 16 and quarterfinals on Saturday. This marks a change from previous years – when only the Round of 40 was played on the first day – in order to ensure that no player participate in more than two matches in one day.
The boys and girls semifinals and championship matches will be held at Bates College on Memorial Day, May 28.
The Racket & Fitness Center on Outer Congress Street in Portland will be the backup indoor location for tournament play on all three days, so all tournament matches will be played on the day they are scheduled.
