Unbeaten Rams roll to 13th win Bangor’s Edwards shuts out Old Town in 5 innings

BANGOR – At 9-4, the Old Town baseball team has the second-best record in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference’s Class A North baseball ranks this spring.

But defending state champion Bangor showed Monday night that the gulf between first and second place couldn’t be wider, whipping the Coyotes 10-0 in a five-inning game at Mansfield Stadium.

The win was the 24th straight for the Rams, 13-0 this season, and marked the sixth time this spring Bangor has ended a game under the 10-run rule.

“When you get great pitching and good defense and hit the way we do, it’s a pretty good recipe,” said Bangor head coach Jeff Fahey, who with assistant coach John Tennett improved their seven-year record in the Rams’ dugout to 100-23.

Ian Edwards pitched his fourth consecutive shutout, extending his scoreless streak to 29 innings. The junior righthander, who pitched a six-inning one-hitter when the Rams beat Old Town 16-0 in their earlier meeting, yielded two hits in the rematch.

“I think this was the best my fastball has felt control-wise,” said Edwards. “I kept the ball low and my cutter was there again. That was the best game [catcher] Gordie [Webb] has called, too. I started pitching before he gave me a sign. We knew what we were throwing, and that helped a lot.”

Edwards (5-0) got errorless defense behind him and plenty of offensive support from the six-through-nine hitters in the lineup, who went 7-for-11 with five runs scored and five RBIs.

“We’re so confident one through nine down the order that it doesn’t matter if it’s our No. 1 batter or No. 4 batter or No. 9 batter,” said senior center fielder Tom Crews, who tripled and singled twice with two runs scored and an RBI. “It really depends on what kind of day each person’s having. If the No. 1 batter’s having a bad day, the No. 9 hitter will pick him up and get a couple of hits. We’re just solid one through nine.”

Junior shortstop John Cox added two singles and two RBIs, while sophomore left fielder Ryan Larochelle singled home a run and scored twice and junior first baseman Tyler McDade also had an RBI single.

Bangor reached Old Town starter Jarrett Lukas (3-2) for three unearned runs with two outs in the first inning.

“They know how to win, they’ve won 24 in a row and they’ve won the state championship, so you can’t give a team like that extra chances,” said Old Town coach Dave Utterback. “At some point, our guys have to realize that they can play with anybody, Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, anybody on the schedule. We’re capable of playing with them.”

Larochelle manufactured a run in the second. He walked and then advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice by Kyle Vanidestine before scoring on a single by Shane Walton.

“I caught a glimpse of where the bunt was going and saw the third baseman charging,” said Larochelle. “Once I saw that I just took off for third knowing he probably wouldn’t get back by then.”

Bangor broke the game open with four runs in the third, with Cox roping an RBI single down the left-field line and Larochelle and Vanidestine following with RBI hits.

The Rams extended their lead in the fourth. Webb walked, and pinch-runner Jimmy Burns scored when Crews tripled deep to right. Cox lined a single to left one out later for the game’s final run.
