This time of year is especially busy for members of Maine’s military honor guards, which bestow full military honors at the gravesides of honorably discharged veterans.
At the recent interment of Everett Burns Sr., the Maine Air National Guard’s Honor Guard conducted a ceremony that included a two-gun salute, a live trumpeter playing taps and the presentation of an American flag to the family of the deceased.
However, Senior Master Sgt. Michael Gleason and Tech. Sgt. Jeff Patterson of the Maine Air National Guard stressed that veterans from every branch of the military are eligible for honors. Interested family members should contact their funeral director, who will be able to arrange the service.
