OFFENBURG, Germany – Mountain biker Adam Craig of Corinth and Bend, Ore., placed 42nd Sunday in the second race of the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Cup elite men’s cross country race season.
Craig was timed in 2 hours, 33 minutes, 32.4 seconds for the rain-soaked, seven-lap event, which was won by 2004 Olympic champion Julien Absalon. Absalon was timed in 2:18:54.02, and used the victory to take the World Cup points lead. One-hundred-seventy-one riders finished the race.
Craig was the fourth-fastest American finisher in the race as he seeks to build his resume with an eye toward earning a berth on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. Todd Wells finished 25th overall, followed by Jeremiah Bishop (30th) and Sam Schultz (40th).
Craig, who struggled to a 109th place finish at the season-opening event in Houffalize, Belgium in late April, currently ranks 65th overall and fifth among Americans in the World Cup point standings.
The UCI cross country circuit resume June 9-10 at Champery, Switzerland, before coming to North America for back-to-back stops in Quebec, Mont-Ste.-Anne on June 23-24 and St. Felicien on July 1-2.
