Interleague play no longer holds interest

This ancient town team shortstop has watched his last interleague game, except the World Series. This irrevocable decision was precipitated by the recent trio of games between the Braves and Red Sox. To give these dreary exhibitions an aura of credibility, both managers planted a few of their stars in lineups of benchwarmers and farm team wannabes.

Yes, John Smoltz and Chipper Jones were there with Ortiz and Manny. But mostly the mound was occupied by a steady stream of batting practice pitchers, relievers, and savers who didn’t know where home plate was located. Predictably, both teams brought out all their weak hitters to bask in 15 minutes of fame at Fenway.

Wisely, both managers orchestrated these sordid and soggy events to rest their “A” teams for regular-season races in their own leagues. So much for interleague, major league. To keep my blood pressure within due bounds, I’m saving my angst on the designated hitter, wild card, and all-star games for another day.

Hat’s off to UMaine for choosing Blodgett

My hat’s off to the University of Maine Athletic Department for awarding Cindy Blodgett the coaching job of the women’s basketball team. I feel UMaine made a wide decision to place a local girl who put all of her might into basketball and mastered the game.

I’m sure when Cindy’s name came up, it brought a unanimous vote in favor. Like many others, I would like to wish Cindy and the Black Bears the very best for the coming season.
