PORTLAND – The Maine Sports Hall of Fame will award University of Southern Maine women’s basketball coach Gary Fifield with its 2007 President’s Award, given to people making exceptional contributions to Maine sports and still actively competing or participating.
Fifield, who has been USM’s women’s coach for 20 years, has notched more than 500 wins to go with just 82 losses. He has been named Little East Conference coach of the year 13 times and led the Huskies to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1998.
Fifield will be honored at the annual banquet at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland June 19 at 5 p.m. along with eight other people, who will be enshrined in the Hall. They are: basketball coaches Bryce Beattie and Eugene Hunter, football player David Fernald, weightlifter Martin Joyce, equestrian rider Betty Davis, late football coach Mike Landry, athlete Arthur Smith and football/track athlete James Soule.
