BANGOR – Rain didn’t stop the United Cerebral Palsy of Maine Bridges group from participating in the Autism Society of Maine Walk for Autism held April 29 at University College of Bangor. The group of 25 raised more than $300 as a result of the two-mile walk.

“I participated in the walk with my daughter because I work directly with families who have autistic children,” said Nicole Martin, a caseworker for UCP of Maine. “I see how difficult it is for some of them just to get through a day or a week. This is my way to show support to these families and help spread autism awareness in our community.”

The Bridges preschool is a developmental teaching program for children with the diagnosis of autism, pervasive developmental disorder or who have a severe social and communication disorder. Autism is a brain disorder that begins in early childhood and persists throughout adulthood. It affects three crucial areas of development – communication, social interaction and creative or imaginative play.

A 2007 Centers for Disease Control report found that one in 150 children in America today is affected by autism.
