Dover-Foxcroft to start waterline work

DOVER-FOXCROFT – A Bradley construction firm will begin work soon on a waterline extension on the Milo Road to Pleasant River Lumber Co.

Selectmen on Wednesday accepted a bid of $265,504 from Buchanan Construction Inc. It was the lowest bid submitted for the work. The highest bid represented $100,000 more.

The entire project that includes construction and engineering is expected to cost $451,000, which will be funded through a congressional earmark of $451,100.

Town Manager Jack Clukey said the main will be installed to the property line of Pleasant River Lumber Co. The company then will tie into the line to feed a standpipe they have for fire suppression efforts, he said. The project also will include the installation of two more fire hydrants on that side of town.

A petition from Larrabee Farm Road residents that asked the town to accept a public easement for about 1,700 feet of the road was accepted by selectmen.

Accepting an easement does not delegate any responsibility to the town; it simply would allow the town to do some summer maintenance as requested by residents, Clukey told selectmen Wednesday.

The next step is for abutters to sign deeds conveying the easement to the town. In addition, a map must be submitted that adequately locates the easement to be recorded at the registry of deeds.

Another road discussed was Harrison Avenue, which for now will remain a two-way street. Selectmen had agreed earlier to change it to one-way effective in June before the opening of the new SeDoMoCha Elementary School.

Since funding for a sidewalk on the avenue will be available for construction in 2008, the move may not be needed.

In other business, selectmen were happy to accept a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and $900 in cash that was seized during a drug investigation and was later forfeited after the owner was convicted. The property and money will be used by the Police Department.
