One week from today, one of this city’s most delightful residents will celebrate his 98th birthday, and you’re invited to attend that special event.
Bernard “Doc” Mann will be guest of honor at a birthday party beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at St. John’s Parish Hall, 207 York St., in Bangor.
Janice Cox reports the celebration is a potluck event, and you are asked to RSVP with the rectory office at 942-6941 to “be advised as to what kind of potluck to bring.”
She wrote that “cards will be joyfully received and, for those wishing to do so, donations may be made” in Mann’s name to the St. John’s Organ Society, attention Kevin Birch,” 207 York St., Bangor 04401.
Most longtime residents know who “Doc” Mann is, and the countless ways in which he has faithfully served his community for so many years.
But, for those of you who do not know him as well, Cox reports he “is a person of many talents.”
“Many in the area will remember him as their teacher,” she wrote.
“Some know him as a skillful chess player. He has talent in the musical field; instructs chess players; and shares his knowledge of sign language.
“These are just a few of the many interests of this beloved gentleman who is still sharing his time and talents with the community.”
Sue McKay of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor reports its Perennial Plant Sale is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the church, 120 Park St., in Bangor.
The rain or shine event also includes houseplants, annuals, bushes and herbs.
Richard “Dick” Norton is being honored on the occasion of his retirement from the Dedham school system, reports Kristi Kelshaw, a member of the school board for Dedham School.
Kelshaw wrote that the Dedham School community is celebrating Norton’s 34 years as “a teacher, the principal and now the superintendent of Dedham School.”
An open house is planned for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in the Dedham School gymnasium.
The public is invited to attend, she wrote, and “celebrate Dick Norton’s 34 years of dedication to our children.”
The day after Dick Norton’s retirement party, Kristi Kelshaw hopes the public will enjoy hearing Flash in the Pans in concert “to help us raise money for the playground we want to install for our children,” she wrote.
Flash in the Pans will provide “some great fun, talent and entertainment” rain or shine from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Dedham School athletic fields, 2065 Main Road in Dedham.
Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children or $10 for families. The fundraiser also includes raffles.
You are invited to participate in a Hermon Volunteer Rescue Squad fundraiser in two ways: in person or online.
You can attend a Pampered Chef Kitchen Products fundraiser at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Hermon Rescue on Billings Road, where you also will find food, fun and prizes, reports Nancy Oakes.
A portion of the proceeds from any sales benefits Hermon Rescue.
