BANGOR – The sound of breaking glass early Friday morning prompted two of Big Fred’s neighbors to call police.
Two men allegedly tossed a large sign that warned drivers of road construction on a section of Center Street through a window of the sandwich shop, known locally for its roast beef sandwiches.
Damage to the store was estimated at $400.
Center Street between Cumberland and Somerset streets has been closed to traffic for at least two weeks for sewer and road work.
Bangor police were called to Big Fred’s at 97 Center St. about 4:15 a.m. No suspects were in the area, according to a police report.
A neighbor told the officer who responded that she had seen two white males, both heavy-set, carry the sign that faced the intersection, and throw it through the window of Big Fred’s. She also told police that the men ran up Cumberland Street toward Broadway.
