Calais Civic Center to screen ‘The Sting’

CALAIS – The movie “The Sting” will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the Holmestead, Calais Civic Center, at 527 Main St. This 1973 American film took in more than $160 million and won seven Academy Awards. “The Sting” is set during the Prohibition era in Chicago.

The film also pioneered a genre of movies that mixes a 1930s theme with the mythology of popular gangsters. The story was inspired by real-life con games perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorf. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are the sweet-talking con men.

The film is presented by the Saint Croix River Valley Arts Council film society and hosted by the St. Croix Historical Society in Calais. All are welcome. There is no admission fee, but donations are suggested.
