Sparrow tour
Join a Sparrow Tour with Fields Pond Audubon Center’s John Wyatt and improve your sparrow identification skills. The tour is set for 7 a.m.-noon Sunday, June 10, in Prospect and Frankfort. Participants will meet at the Winterport public parking lot on Route 1A next to Old Commercial House Antiques. The fee is $5 members, $6 others. Proceeds will benefit Fields Pond Audubon Center. Letter carriers’ food drive
At the 15th annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive held May 12, residents of central and eastern Maine donated a record total of 123,538 pounds – more than 61 tons – of food to help alleviate hunger in their communities. This was a 23 percent increase over last year.
More than half the donated food, 99,152 pounds, came from towns within the readership area of The Weekly:

Birthday party
The friends of Bernard Mann are planning a birthday party potluck supper for him as he celebrates 98 years. The party will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at St. John’s Parish Hall, 207 York St.
Mr. Mann possesses many talents. Many will remember him as a teacher. Some knew him as a skillful chess player. He has musical talent, instructs chess players and shares his knowledge of sign language.
Those who wish to attend the gathering should RSVP to the rectory office, 942-6941, to learn what food to bring for the potluck meal. Those who wish also may bring cards for Mr. Mann, or make donations in his name to St. John’s Organ Society. Jane Robbins-Teel of the City Manager’s Office was honored on her 30th anniversary as a city employee on May 9.

Humane Society fundraiser
The Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop and the Bangor Humane Society invite the public to bring their children for an evening of fun and games at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the animal shelter, 693 Mt. Hope Ave. Children may make a stuffed animal, name it, wish upon a star, fill out a birth certificate for their critter and receive a T-shirt. The cost is $20.
Or, make a donation to the shelter and participate in games. Snacks will be provided. Proceeds benefit the Bangor Humane Society. For more information, call 299-7193.
Adoption information
MAPS Adoption and Humanitarian Aid will hold an informational meeting 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at the MAPS office, 181 Main St. The meeting will provide an overview of the adoption process, eligibility requirements for potential families, costs involved and profiles of children in need of adoptive families. Meeting highlights will include video presentations from adoptive families telling of their experiences with international and domestic adoption. Kiwanis Club News
The “So You Think You Have Talent Show” sponsored by the Brewer Kiwanis Club is over, and it was a huge success with many outstanding acts, according to Kiwanis member Herb Hopkins.
The top winner, accepting a prize of $1,000, was Rasheem Alavache, who sang Josh Groban’s hit, “You Raised Me Up.”
Three $500 winners were:
Category 1, age 12 and under, Katarina Amy Pinet, who tap-danced to “Jumpin’ Jack.”
Category 2, ages 13 to 17, Taylor Libby, who sang “Feeling Good.”
Category 3, 19 to adult, the jazz band Bence and Company.
Special thanks go to Debbie Roy, who was the chairman; Jim Pooler, for getting the ads for the program; Brewer High Key Club; Brady Harris, for his work with the sound system; and all the Kiwanians who helped put this together.
The program was dedicated in memory of Wesley C. Archer, a longtime Kiwanian who had 55 years of perfect attendance.
At the last meeting, officers were elected: president, Jessica Tilton; vice president, Patricia Largay; secretary, Herb Hopkins; past president, Kathleen Harding-Heber; board of directors: Jim Pooler, Kim Long, Jane Newberry, Bob Dion, Carlton King and Debbie Roy.

Solidarity Sale
The H.O.M.E. Inc.-EMMAUS Solidarity Sale will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, June 14-16, at the Saint Francis Inn Homeless Shelter, 988 Acadia Highway.
The sale is an expression of H.O.M.E. and EMMAUS International’s commitment to helping those who suffer most to gain access to drinking water. Proceeds go directly to Benin, a country where barely half the population has access to drinking water, sale organizers said.

Under the Big Top Auction
The Orono Public Library Foundation will hold an auction Saturday, June 9, at the Buchanan Alumni House, 160 College Ave. The silent auction will begin at 7 p.m., the live auction at 9 p.m. John Cheney of Realty of Maine will serve as auctioneer. Jazz music, hors d’oeuvres, desserts and a cash bar will be featured.
Items up for bid include a one-week vacation in Hawaii, a one-week stay at a vacation home in Hancock Point, closet clear-out and personal shopping services with Shop Girl Kristen Andresen, dinner for two at Dirigo Pines private dining room with overnight stay at the Black Bear Inn, five-course Italian dinner prepared by chef Dave Pickering in your home, two-hour limousine service for 12, tickets to UM athletics events, artwork from local artists, photography packages, Bangor Symphony Orchestra season passes, Maine Center for the Arts tickets, an outing on a lobster boat, boat tours, an evening of violin with Nathan Lesser, five-course dinner and wine tasting party for six, handpainted table and chair, gift certificates to local shops and restaurants, snowshoes, orchids, massages, yoga classes, chicken pies and more.
