HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

Stars get 1 more chance Many of state’s best to compete in NEs

While a great deal of Eastern Maine’s track and field standouts will be earning high school diplomas over the weekend, others will get to showcase their talents at the high school level one last time.

The Penobscot Valley Conference will be well represented at this weekend’s New England track and field championships at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts.

On the girls’ side, Mount Desert Island sophomore Danielle Hutchins, the state Class B champ in the 200 meters at 26.00 seconds, will compete in that event in addition to the 100.

Class C 100-meter champ Jamie Pelletier of Fort Kent will also be in the 100-meter field.

Orono freshman Kate Bulteel, the state “C” 200 champ, will run that event and will join Chelsea Paul, Kate Kelley, and Meghan Curtis on the 4×400 relay.

Brewer will send two relay teams: the 4×100 quartet of K.C. Collins, Kira Giroux, Colleen Carr, and Mackenzie DeGraff and the 4×800 team of Brooke Madden, Ashley Geiser, Bekah Clark, and Caitlyn Wilson.

Messalonskee of Oakland’s Jesse Labreck, who shattered the state record in the 300-meter hurdles, leads the Maine contingent in that event, as well as the 100 hurdles and long jump.

Old Town’s Hilary Maxim, who earned two second-place finishes in the state championships, will run the 1,600, and Bangor’s Jennie Lucy will compete in the 800.

John Bapst of Bangor’s Angel Nelligan and Heather Jackson of Old Town look to shine in the pole vault as does Foxcroft Academy’s Vanessa Baird in the discus.

On the boys’ side, Hampden Academy’s Jonathan Lenz and Old Town’s Brandon Gastia will renew their friendly jumping rivalry one last time, with both competing in the long and triple jumps.

Lenz will also participate in the high jump, where he’ll join teammate Jadrien Cousins and OT’s Sam Petrie.

Riley Masters of Bangor, who helped guide the Rams to its first outdoor state title since 1987, will compete in the 1,600.

John Bapst’s Chris Fogler will run in both hurdle races, and Nokomis of Newport’s Steve Shea will compete in the shot put and discus. Derek Smith of Bapst is entered in the javelin.

Cobscook 10K has good turnout

This past weekend’s Cobscook Bay 10K and 5K road races in Pembroke had solid turnouts of 49 runners in the 5K and 65 more in the 10K.

Jeremy Lisee and Stephanie Allard were overall winners in the 10K while Brandon Vashon and Sally Peckenham took home victories in the 5K.

Lucia Aretakis, the daughter of race director Jonathan Aretakis, won the one-mile fun run.

Eden announces race series

The Eden Athletics running club and Jack Russell’s Steak House in Bar Harbor have teamed up to form a point series for the Mount Desert Island-based club.

The series, like the Sub 5 race series, will allow runners to accumulate points at certain races based on their finishes in overall and age-group categories.

Runners must complete four races to be eligible for end-of-season awards.

The series kicks off this weekend with the MDI YMCA 10K at 10 a.m.

Other races in the series are: the Eden Track Festival 2-mile run, the Tremont Trot 4-miler, the George Shaefer 5K, the Jack Russell’s Steak House Downhill Mile, the Bar Harbor Half Marathon, the Rolling Bones 5K, the Ledgelawn Mile, and the Running of the Wildcats 5K.
