SOUTH PARIS – Reid McLaughlin’s two-run triple highlighted a five-run first inning that lifted No. 6 Brewer past No. 3 Oxford Hills 5-2 in an Eastern Maine Class A baseball quarterfinal Thursday.

Brad Brown and Caleb Smith added RBI singles during the uprising, in which Brewer sent nine batters to the plate against Oxford Hills pitcher Ben Goodall.

Brewer did not score again, but that was enough offense for junior righthander Greg Higgins, who improved his record to 3-2 by scattering five hits while striking out eight batters and walking one in a complete-game performance.

McLaughlin also singled for Brewer, while Smith singled twice and Rick Adams doubled as the Witches won for the 10th time in their last 13 games.

Chris Roy singled twice for Oxford Hills, while Goodall and Ethan Sutton each doubled.

Tyler Cates had three singles and an RBI for the Coyotes, Dana Leland hit a two-run single, Evan Paradis doubled, and Jarrett Lukas had an RBI single.

Sam Seldman led Brunswick with two singles and Duncan Lowe singled and scored a run.

Hull also doubled for the Crusaders in support of righthander Alex Yates, who pitched a six-hitter and held Caribou scoreless after the second inning.

Pat Thibodeau singled twice for Caribou, while Kyle Corrigan tripled and Mike Doucette doubled.

Dustin Haines also pitched a six-hitter for Caribou, but the Vikings were hurt by seven errors.

Todd Freeman hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Golden Bucks. Eddie Robbins had a double and two singles with two RBIs, and Matt Jackson singled twice and scored three runs.

A.J. McGowen hit an RBI double to lead the Tigers, Dan Beatham singled twice, and Ethan Woodman hit an RBI single.

At Blue Hill, the fourth-ranked Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to oust No. 5 Washington Academy of East Machias.

Ebb Walton led off the inning with a single, and Josh Astbury plated him one batter later with a double. After a walk to Steve Ensworth, a Lucas Marks infield single, and a popout, Nate Hines lined a sharp single to plate Astbury and Ensworth with the winning runs.

Hines finished with two singles, Astbury added a single, and Marks had an RBI double for George Stevens. Peter Dickinson laced a two-run double in the fourth to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Takeo Kurose paced the Raiders with an RBI double and an RBI single, while Todd Jun singled three times and knocked in a run.

Skowhegan remained scoreless until the sixth, when Crystal Johnson singled home one run and the go-ahead run came home on an error.

Brittany Gould’s RBI single provided the Indians with an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Gott finished with two singles for Hampden, while Michelle Wells doubled.

Hollie Stanwood doubled, singled, and drove in a run for Sumner. Sargent had two singles and two RBIs, and Higgins doubled.

Hilary Haney hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead Central, and Erica Brownell singled twice.

Stearns forfeits quarterfinal

Third-seeded Stearns of Millinocket forfeited its quarterfinal against No. 6 Washington Academy of East Machias.

The forfeit was the result of disciplinary action against students, said school board chairman Tom Malcolm. He declined to comment further.

The decision to forfeit the game was made Thursday morning, Malcolm added.

The 13-5 Raiders will face No. 2 Penobscot Valley of Howland in the semifinals. Stearns finishes at 12-5.

At Bangor, Jillian French pitched a no-hitter, allowing just one run and one walk while striking out four to lead No. 1 Bangor Christian past No. 8 Jonesport-Beals.

Christen Pelletier doubled and singled to drive in a run for the Patriots, and French hit a two-run single. Moriah Bach hit an RBI double. Chelsea Brasslett had an RBI single, and Katherine Bragg singled twice and scored a run.

Breanna Beal scored a run for the Royalettes.
