BANGOR – The captain of Maine Maritime Academy’s training vessel has returned to Maine and is recuperating at a hospital in Bangor, according to his family.
Laurence “Larry” Wade was moved Thursday night at Eastern Maine Medical Center to an inpatient rehab facility, a relative indicated Friday in an online blog.
Wade, a 1964 graduate of MMA, was on the academy’s training vessel State of Maine in the Mediterranean Sea on May 27 when he suffered an apparent stroke. He was taken off the ship and hospitalized in Syracuse, Italy, before he was flown back to Bangor via air ambulance on Monday.
On its Web site, www.mma.edu, MMA provides a link to a blog posted by Wade’s family, where they keep friends and other well-wishers apprised of his condition.
“He is physically still very weak and tired,” the blog – found at www.caringbridge.org – indicated Friday. “He’s really anxious to get back on his feet, so this is a step in the right direction.”
Wade is not yet well enough to have visitors outside his immediate family, the blog indicated, but may be well enough to do so next week.
