The writer of the letter “Iraq win our last best hope” (BDN, June 9-10) states that we should keep on in Iraq because “We gave up in Vietnam, millions of innocents were killed and tortured. Let’s not do it again.”
It is a little stunning to see history turned on its head like that. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” Most of the innocents killed in Vietnam – and there were indeed millions – were killed by us before we finally accepted the futility and immorality of what we were doing. After we left, some bad things continued to happen for a while at a very much smaller scale, but predictions of disaster did not come true. There are still some who believe we should have continued the killing indefinitely until we “won.” Won what?
The same question must be asked about our actions in Iraq.
