Xoliswa April of the Nyanga township in Cape Town, South Africa, will give a lecture at noon Monday, June 18, at the Bangor Public Library. April, whose first name is pronounced “Co-lee-swa” will talk about growing up under the apartheid regime and the spiritual qualities that have brought healing to her family, community and nation. In her lecture, “Comfort in Times of Trouble,” April will explain how she lived the spirit of ubuntu – compassion, forgiveness and common humanity – through the injustices of the apartheid era. The lecture is sponsored by the First Church of Christ Science in Bangor. Churches in Bangor and Brunswick have been working with April and her South African church in a prayer-based partnership that has led to the purchase of a minibus for township outreach and healing ministry with funds provided by Maine churches. For more information, call the library, 947-8336.
