CHICAGO – David Slovenski of Brunswick and Chelsey Tewell of York have been named Gatorade Maine Boys and Girls Track and Field Athletes of the Year.

This spring, Slovenski became the first Maine high school athlete to clear 15 feet in the pole vault. He had cleared 15 feet, 53/4 inches indoors last winter.

Tewell is a sophomore hurdler and sprinter who won Class B state titles in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.13 seconds) and 100-meter dash (12.66). Both times were tops in Maine, regardless of class. She also anchored her team’s second-place 4×100 relay and was seventh in the long jump.
