Pupils from James F. Doughty School in Bangor competed last week with their model cars at the Northeast Regional Junior Solar Sprint Championship in Massachusetts.

The youngsters – Rachel Clark, Hayley Trafton, Jenson Cook, Michael Evans, Cody Knight and Scott Fleeman – earned invitations to attend the regional championship after their performance at the Maine area qualifier earlier this year. The regional was June 10 in Springfield, Mass.

Nearly 120 top-performing middle school teams comprising 270 pupils from across the Northeast entered this year’s Junior Solar Sprint Championship.

The Northeast Junior Solar Sprint program is sponsored by the U.S. Army and is run by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association. NESEA provides workshops for educators, subsidies for area events, and runs the Northeast Championship. For information, visit www.nesea.org/education/jss.
