BREWER – An Eddington woman was taken to the hospital Monday with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car and thrown from the motorcycle she was driving, Brewer police Sgt. Rich Smith said.
Rhonda Moulton, 45, was following her husband, who also was driving a motorcycle, on Eastern Avenue when a car coming from the opposite direction crested a hill and swerved into their lane.
Gregory Caron, 18, of Brewer told police that he thought the motorcycles were turning and swerved to avoid them. He then overcorrected and slid into the soft shoulder, which sent his car into a spin, Smith said.
While still spinning, the right front passenger side of Caron’s car struck Moulton’s motorcycle.
“The witnesses said it threw the motorcycle and [Moulton] up into the air,” Smith said.
The motorcycle flew about 15 feet past the point of impact and Moulton was thrown about 10 feet. Caron’s car continued for approximately 40 to 50 feet before stopping.
Moulton was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Her condition wasn’t known Monday evening. She was wearing a helmet, according to police reports.
Witnesses corroborated Moulton’s husband’s statement that he and his wife weren’t turning but had slowed because they saw the car coming toward them.
Caron was issued traffic violations and fines for imprudent speed, failure to keep right and an expired inspection sticker. The fines totaled nearly $400, and other charges may be filed. Caron suffered minor injuries but wasn’t taken to the hospital.
Brewer Police and Fire departments, Holden police and Capital Ambulance responded to the report of the accident at 3:20 p.m. The Bangor Police Department’s accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate because of the seriousness of Moulton’s injuries.
Smith said they cleared the scene at 6:30 p.m., but he was still waiting for the team’s findings.
