N.H. AG warns about sweepstakes scam

CONCORD, N.H. – The check may be in the mail, but it might be fake. New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte warned consumers Monday not to cash any sweepstakes checks that appear to be from MMG Insurance Co.

She said consumers across the country have been receiving the checks along with letters telling them they’ve won a sweepstakes and instructing them to pay a processing fee to receive more money. The checks are counterfeit and the use of the company’s name is unauthorized.

Ayotte said banks may initially cash the checks, but once the checks turn out to be fake, consumers are responsible for returning the money plus any bank fees.
