KEENE, N.H. – Waterville High School’s Chris Hamel fired a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for fourth place in the New England High School Boys Golf Championships Monday at the Bretwood Golf Course.

Bucksport’s Whitney Hand was the top Maine finisher in the girls competition. She carded an 86 to finish in a tie for 12th.

Tom McCarthy of Tolland High in Connecticut won in the boys competition in a playoff with a score of 70, beating out Hunter Thayer of Rice in Vermont and Bernie D’Amaro of Weston in Connecticut.

Gorham’s David Gushee shot a 73 to tie for seventh place and Morse of Bath’s Jason Harris carded a 75 for ninth.

Central Aroostook of Mars Hill’s Tim Carlson and Bangor Christian’s Nick Pelletier both shot an 81 to finish in a 4-way tie for 15th overall.

Other Maine finishers in the boys tournament were Kevin Byrne who scored a 78 and tied for 12th; Adam Packard of Falmouth and Jim Sterling of North Yarmouth Academy tied for 13th with a 79; and Mount Ararat of Topsham’s Henry Fall was 14th with an 80.

Other Maine finishers in the girls competition were Hampden Academy’s Julie Aurie, who scored a 91 to tie for 16th and NYA’s Kate Merrill, who had a 95 and came in 20th.

Tracy Martin of Bishop Guertin High in New Hampshire won the girls title with a 72.
