ROCKLAND – A man whose motorcycle smashed into rocks near the Rockland Golf Club on Old County Road Tuesday was injured critically, Rockland police reported.

Rene Anctil, 61, of Hope was traveling north on Old County Road at about 2:55 p.m. and entered the sharp curve near the clubhouse, according to a police report. Another man riding on another motorcycle, following Anctil, reported that Anctil started to cross the road’s centerline and then left the road on the opposite side.

Anctil’s Harley-Davidson struck a granite rock along the border of the golf club’s property, vaulting the motorcycle into the air, according to the other man. Anctil was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on one of the rocks, causing internal injuries.

Anctil was not wearing a helmet, according to the accident report.

Anctil was a patient at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport on Wednesday afternoon, according to Deputy Chief Wally Tower, but his condition was not immediately available from hospital staff.
