Scarbourough’s Griffin named Miss Softball McLain, Hall earn regional awards

AUGUSTA – Cony Family Field has been good to Kelsey Griffin lately.

Last Saturday the Scarborough High pitcher struck out 17 in a 2-0 win over Skowhegan for the Class A state championship in a game held at the field.

Thursday night Griffin was back to play in the Maine Association of Softball Coaches A-B Senior All-Star Game.

Griffin will take away one more memory of the facility. Before the all-star game, Griffin was named Miss Maine Softball, an honor given to the top senior in the state.

“I don’t think I could have come back here if we didn’t win [the state title],” Griffin said, standing next to the visitor’s dugout after she warmed up to start the annual all-star game. “This is really exciting.”

The regional players of the year were also honored Thursday night, with Brewer pitcher Jordan McLain and Bucksport pitcher Terren Hall taking the awards for Eastern Maine Class A and B respectively. Stephanie Perry of Calais was named the Eastern Maine Class C winner and Megan Korhonen of Greater Houlton Christian Academy earned Class D honors.

McLain was excited to receive the award.

“It means a lot,” the Witches pitcher said. “I was hoping to get this. It was something I [strove] for when I was younger.”

In Western Maine, Griffin was the Class A Player of the Year and Fryeburg’s Danni Hill earned Class B honors. The Class C winner was Ashley Marandola of Madison and Hilary Trott of Richmond took home the Class D award.

Gorham’s Caitlyn Butterfield was named the winner of a $500 scholarship given by the coaches’ association.

Griffin, who is headed to Iona next fall, had an impressive senior season including her 2007 Class A title. She had 180 strikeouts in 103 innings and finished with a sparkling 0.12 earned-run average, allowing just three earned runs all year. She also batted .412.

She was also the Gatorade Maine Player of the Year and the Southern Maine Activities Association Player of the Year for her junior and senior seasons.

Griffin struck out four and gave up one hit in two innings of the all-star game, while hitting a leadoff single and scoring the first run of the contest. She singled again later in the game.

Hall said she was pleased to win a regional Player of the Year trophy alongside McLain. The two will play together at the University of Maine next year along with fellow all-star Brynne Davis of Winslow. McLain and Hall also play summer softball together.

“I’m very happy for the other girls who got it, too,” Hall said. “It’s a good feeling to get it with Jordan because we’re going to school together next year and we’ve been playing together ever since we were young. It just feels good to get it with her.”
