STANDISH – Jarrett Lukas was presented the Dr. John Winkin Award symbolic of the state’s Mr. Baseball just before the start of Friday night’s 2007 Maine High School Senior All-Star Baseball Classic.
Then he showed why.
Moments after the awards ceremony, the Old Town High School standout was hit by the game’s first pitch, stole second base and scored on a single by Bucksport’s Chris Maguire to give the East a quick 1-0 lead.
Then he made a diving stop up the middle from his shortstop position to rob Cape Elizabeth’s Patrick Murphy of a hit in the bottom of the inning, and showed off his arm in throwing out the next batter, Todd Kenneborus of Cheverus of Portland.
Lukas followed those first-inning heroics by slamming a two-run triple to the right-center field gap in the top of the second and scoring on a single by Winslow’s Brendan Weed and starting an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the third.
And if that wasn’t enough, Lukas added a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth and returned to the game on the mound in the eighth to pick up the save as the East earned an 8-6 victory.
“If you’re on a good team, you get more recognition,” said Lukas after receiving the award. “But as long as you hit the ball well, throw the ball well and catch the ball well you can get noticed.”
Lukas was selected from a field of finalists that also included Gordon Webb of Bangor, Joe Douglass of Poland and Josh Jillson of Oak Hill of Sabattus.
“Any one of the guys could have won the award,” said Lukas. “Gordie hit something like .590, Josh threw a no-hitter and Joe had a great year, too. It was a surprise, a great honor.”
Lukas used his arm, bat and glove to lead Old Town to a 14-5 record and a berth in the Eastern Maine Class A semifinals this spring. He batted .487 with four home runs, 17 RBIs, a .655 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage.
Opposing pitchers often worked around the Coyotes’ standout, issuing six intentional walks and nine additional walks. Lukas also was hit by a pitch 10 other times this spring before Friday’s all-star game at Saint Joseph’s College.
On the mound, Lukas compiled a 5-3 record with a 2.13 earned run average and 49 strikeouts in 46 innings.
The University of Maine-bound Lukas also starred in last Monday’s second annual Maine-New Hampshire senior all-star game at Hadlock Field in Portland, hitting a triple, double and single with three RBIs in leading Maine to a 7-5 victory.
Lukas was a first-team All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A north selection, and previously was named the 2007 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.
Webb led Bangor to its second straight Eastern Maine Class A championship, batting .555 with three home runs, 24 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
The catching standout also helped the Rams win the 2006 Class A state championship and compile a 30-game winning streak before an 11-4 loss to Deering of Portland in this year’s state final. Bangor went 50-9 over the last three years with Webb as the starting catcher, and 37-3 the past two seasons.
Webb will attend Bates College in Lewiston this fall.
Jillson, a left-handed pitcher who will room with Lukas at the University of Maine this fall, compiled a 4-4 record with a 1.79 earned run average at Oak Hill this spring, a season highlighted by a no-hitter against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.
Jillson, who went 9-0 while leading the Raiders to the 2006 Class B state championship, also played first base and in the outfield this spring and had a .505 batting average.
Douglass, a pitcher-first baseman-outfielder, led Poland to a 17-2 overall record, the No. 1 seed in Western Maine Class B and a berth in the regional championship game.
The lefthander went 5-1 on the mound, and batted .500 as the Knights’ leadoff hitter en route to being named the Western Maine Conference’s player of the year for the second consecutive year.
Douglass will play at Saint Joseph’s College next season.
