The annual memorial for Charlie Howard will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Hammond Street Congregational Church. After the service (about 7:15 p.m.), worshippers will walk to the State Street Bridge site near where Howard died 23 years ago. Howard was a gay man who was tossed over the side of the bridge by three Bangor teenagers because of his sexual orientation. Howard suffered a severe asthma attack, collapsed and drowned. Plans to erect a permanent memorial to Howard at the site are pending.
