Teens’ dress-up game causes Old Town stir

Old Town police said three teenage boys decided Sunday to play dress-up with plastic guns and a jail uniform and apparently scared some residents.

Two 15-year-olds and a 17-year-old, one dressed in an orange jumpsuit with the words “Maine State Prison” printed on it, carried two fake handguns and a fake shotgun into an area near Winn Station Apartments just before 5 p.m. The apartments are off Pembroke Drive.

Two of the three boys were on the ground when police arrived. The third, wearing the orange suit, was standing with handcuffs and the fake guns scattered on the ground, Sgt. Travis Roy said.

One of the handguns looked real with no markings, which are typically orange muzzle tips, to identify it as a toy, he said.

“One lady opened the door, saw them and slammed the door and called police,” Roy said, adding that a second resident of the apartment also called.

The parents of the boys were called and “we talked about better decision-making,” Roy said. (Nok-Noi Hauger, BDN)
