Somebody during the weekend pulled down the U.S. flag flying outside the Clifton Historical Society building and tried to burn it.

Penobscot County sheriff’s Sgt. Will Sheehan said the incident on Rebel Hill Road occurred between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The flag was found in the parking lot, crumpled into a ball.

It appeared to have been singed, and a book of matches was found on top, he said. The flag is nylon and therefore hard to burn, Sheehan said Monday.

Deputies are looking for anyone who saw someone in the parking lot or has information about who the culprits are. To file a report, call Sheehan or leave a message for him at the Sheriff’s Department at 947-4585. (Nok-Noi Hauger, BDN)

Burglars took numerous cartons of cigarettes and cases of beer during a break-in Sunday night at Pat’s Pizza on Park Street in Milo.

A screen door was cut and glass inside the door was broken to gain entry, Police Chief Michael Poulin said Monday.

Poulin said cartons of cigarettes as well as six 30-can packs of beer and two six-packs of both cold and warm beer were taken during the break-in.

A Carmel man who was driving a 1997 Dodge truck with oversize tires that stuck out beyond its fenders was stopped in Bangor around 8:20 p.m. Sunday.

While he didn’t get a ticket for the tires, John Hawes, 25, who lost his privilege to drive for failing to pay child support, was given a summons for operating after suspension. (Nok-Noi Hauger, BDN)
