Kent Ward tells us of drivers who stay in the left lane when a breakdown lane is available and cars are behind, wanting to pass. I have a solution: Change all signs that read “Slower Traffic Keep Right” to “Keep Right Except to Pass.”
On two occasions, I was riding as a passenger while the driver was staying in the left lane even though several cars were behind, wanting to pass. On each occasion I mentioned the sign that read “Slower Traffic Keep Right.”
On the first occasion, the driver told me that he was not going slow.
On the second occasion, the driver told me that he was going the speed limit, so he did not have to take the right lane.
There are fewer “Slower Traffic Keep Right” signs, but there are still enough of them to confuse people.
