Land projects get federal funding

Five Maine land conservation projects, including several in the Bangor area, have each been awarded $75,000 in federal grants.

The five projects all received the maximum amount under the North American Wetlands Conservation Act small grants program. Each grant will also help leverage hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional money.

The money will help protect:

. 1,609 acres around Big Hill and Second Pond in Dedham.

. 3,070 acres of remote, undeveloped areas in Caribou Bog and the Katahdin Iron Works property in Piscataquis County.

. 83 acres of wetlands and upland habitat on the northern end of Penjajawoc Marsh in Bangor.

. 606 acres of coastal wetland on the Corea Peninsula in Gouldsboro.

. 227 acres of stream frontage, wetlands and upland habitat in Lovell that is part of the Saco River Valley.

Democratic Rep. Tom Allen, who announced the grants Wednesday, praised the groups that put together the conservation packages.

“NAWCA grants are a critical source of funding for habitat for wildlife, particularly waterfowl, here in Maine,” Allen, who represents Maine’s 1st District, said in a statement. “I’m pleased that the North American Wetlands Conservation Council has again recognized the value of Maine’s local conservation projects by awarding nearly a fifth of all funds released nationwide to Maine.”

The House of Representatives was also expected to vote Wednesday to approve a $27.6 billion budget bill for the U.S. Department of the Interior and environmental and conservation programs.

The budget bill contains $3.3 million in federal Forest Legacy Program funds to protect 42,500 acres in what is known as the Lower Penobscot Forest.

The Lower Penobscot Forest project is part of a larger effort to create a corridor of conservation land stretching for 63,000 acres from Milford in Penobscot County to Amherst in Hancock County.
