LIMESTONE – A 23-year-old Limestone woman was arrested and charged with manslaughter early Wednesday evening in connection with the death of a 20-month-old child that she was baby-sitting.
Stephen McCausland, the spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, said that Heather Fortin, 23, was arrested by state police detectives at a residence in Limestone.
She was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton and likely will be arraigned on the manslaughter charge on Friday.
An autopsy concluded that the child, Teairra Leathers, died of head trauma, McCausland said, but police are not releasing information about how that trauma occurred.
An ambulance went to Fortin’s home on Huggard Avenue on June 18, after the child became unresponsive.
The baby was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she died the next day.
The body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, and investigators spent the past few days examining the circumstances surrounding what led the child to become unresponsive and eventually die.
State police investigate the death of all children under 3 years old “as a rule,” according to McCausland.
Future court documents likely will reveal more details about the case, McCausland said Wednesday evening.
