ORONO – The University of Maine’s Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program is seeking nominations for the 22nd annual Maryann Hartman Awards.

Hartman was an associate professor of speech and communication at UMaine and regarded as a distinguished educator, feminist, scholar and humanitarian. Her research included comparisons of language patterns of Maine women and men born before 1900, oral autobiographies of Maine women born before 1900, and the use of oral interpretation to influence public policy. Hartman died of cancer in 1980 at the age of 53.

Each year UMaine’s WIC-WST honors three women whose achievements in the fields of the arts, sciences, education, athletics, politics, business or community service show their commitment to the spirit Maryann Hartman embodied. The work of the women selected provides inspiration to others and demonstrates the levels of attainment now possible for women.

The program also awards the Maryann Hartman Young Women’s Social Justice Award to one teenage woman, age 12 to 18, who shows a commitment to service and the ideals of equality, diversity and tolerance.

Neither nominees nor nominators need to be affiliated with the University of Maine.

“The awards are open to any women with a connection to the state of Maine,” said Regina Rooney of the Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program. The deadline for nominations is July 2.
