Retired racehorses

BANGOR – The Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization of Maine announced that it will sponsor a day of fun and entertainment at Bangor Raceway, Bass Park. Horse lovers are invited to see several retired harness racehorses at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15. Admission is free.

The public is invited to watch retired Standardbreds marshal the harness races for the post parades. Information about adoption of these horses will be available, plus post-race demonstrations on jumping, dressage and show, barrel racing and more. The Standardbreds also may participate in their own race at the historic raceway, weather permitting.

Standardbred owners will be on hand to answer questions and allow attendees to meet the horses in the paddock area.

Among the horses featured at the event will be racers Artist’s Brush, Somekindapill, Dreamy Starlet and Chagoal Grey.

Golf tournament

INDIAN ISLAND – The Penobscot Nation Boys and Girls Club will hold a Putt for the Club golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Palmyra Golf Course.

Prizes will be awarded for a hole in one, the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Prizes include a car provided by Van Syckle Kia, Suzuki and Lincoln; a motorcycle provided by Central Maine Harley Davidson; a Samsung LCD flatscreen TV and more.

Kayak symposium

CASTINE – The annual Castine Kayak Symposium, hosted by Maine Maritime Academy Department of Continuing Education, will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8, on the waterfront.

On water classes are: ACA strokes and rescues; ACA strokes and maneuvers; kayak rolling (Euro); Greenland rolling; Greenland paddling; rescue workshops; paddling in wind and waves.

Navigation series-classroom and on water workshops are: car topping, graceful entry and exit, trip planning, navigation, tides and currents, gadgets and gizmos, essential equipment.

Boat and gear demonstrations will be held 3-6 p.m. Saturday, July 7.

Other attractions of the event include paddle excursions, evening demonstrations, a slide show, music “Jammin’ with Julie Monroe,” Sunday morning workshops and an afternoon paddle to explore Holbrook Island.

“Traditional Greenland Skills” with Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson of Kayak Ways will be offered both Saturday and Sunday. Sessions are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Backshore Beach.

Topics include: yoga stretches for kayak paddlers, Greenland rolling demonstration, Greenland rolling workshop, lunch break – bring your own food, Greenland paddle stroke clinic.

Karate testing

BREWER – Brewer Maine Traditional Karate School had students travel to Dover, N.H., for black belt testing with Shihan Greg Lazarus, seventh degree, U.S. director of the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo Federations.

Taking part in the testing were Lucas Pierce, Nidan, second degree; Sensei Steve Apsega, owner and operator of the Brewer karate school; Dan Colageo, Shodan, first degree; and Jason Brugess, Shodan, first degree.

Benefit road race

GLENBURN – Saturday, June 23, provided an excellent morning for running three miles on a mixture of gravel roads, pavement and grass. A field of 44 runners ranging from a middle school pupil to seniors provided a challenge for many, running a fast course with very little unfavorable weather conditions to inhibit the runners.

Race winners were Riley Masters and Jolene Belanger.

Masters is a senior who attends Bangor High School and who runs for the boys cross country and track teams. His time was 13:19.5.

Belanger is a former Bangor High School cross country and track standout who currently runs for the University of Maine. Her time was 16:33.9.

Both Masters and Belanger set new records for the course, breaking the males’ record of 16:59, held by Collin Popper of Bangor, and the females’ record, held by Belanger, of 17:00, both set last year on the same course.

The road race is run yearly to benefit a fund for the maintenance of an all-weather track complex proposed for use by the Glenburn School and the town of Glenburn.

Funds donated to the Friends of Glenburn Track are earmarked for the basic fund to construct the complex proposed behind the Glenburn School on the Hudson Road.

Biathlon for children

BANGOR – The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department will offer a Wild and Crazy Run and Ride Biathlon for children ages 3 to 10 on Friday, July 13, around Cameron Stadium on Garland Street. The event will include bicycling and running.

Preregistered participants will receive a race day T-shirt and a gift bag. Registration will be taken in advance at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department, 647 Main St. The fee is $10, $15 on race day. For more information and for times for each age group, call 942-4490.
