WEST ENFIELD – Route 2 in West Enfield was closed for about 45 minutes Saturday evening after a single-vehicle crash, according to police.

The driver of an SUV apparently fell asleep behind the wheel just before 6 p.m. Saturday while traveling on Route 2. The vehicle left the roadway, hit a hydrant and overturned, spilling the ATV it was hauling in a trailer, state police said.

The driver, 23-year-old Ryan Whitmore of Milford, was charged with operating a vehicle without a license, said State Trooper Barry Meserve. Both Whitmore and his passenger, 19-year-old Tianna Leland, also of Milford, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Meserve said.
