A call to Christians

Have you noticed that there are more and more articles and letters in the Bangor Daily News and other newspapers and magazines written by individuals identifying themselves as Christians, who focus on the political-social issues of our time and who take positions that are incongruent with Christian Scripture?

I read and listen to many individuals who refer to themselves as Christians, yet they present arguments to support political-social issues that are inconsistent with biblical truth. Whether an individual identifies her or himself as a “liberal” or a “conservative” should not change the Christian position, since the Bible is clear regarding the sanctity of life and marriage, for example.

There are religious leaders who justify their personal-political agenda by citing Bible verses out of context or asserting that the Bible is not literally the word of God, but opinions of “men.” These religious leaders mislead immature Christians, like myself, and attempt to convince us that their opinions regarding abortion, marriage, embryonic stem cell research are just a matter of choice and that you and I can go along with “popular” opinion on these critical social issues. I suspect that some Christians may not fully understand their Christian faith and the foundation which is the Bible. It also appears that some individuals take advantage of Christians who are very nice, kind and decent people, yet passive, and who will accept false doctrine rather than challenge non-Bible-based doctrine.

I encourage all Christians who believe in God to study his word and to stand up and speak out in the public square in response to those who attempt to confuse and misrepresent the Christian faith. We have a wonderful God and a Bible that demonstrates God’s love and compassion and gives us direction for living according to his will.
