The ages 17-and-under boys soccer team representing Maine in the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships failed to advance to the national tournament, while four Maine teams were named winners of the Fair Play Award for sportsmanship.

Coastal SC of Brunswick fell 1-0 to FC Delco, the Pennsylvania-East representative, in the championship game Tuesday morning at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

FC Delco advances to the national championship tournament in Frisco, Texas, later this month.

Coastal SC was the last surviving team out of 18 from Maine. There were 282 teams at the tournament, which began Friday with pool play in Falmouth and Brunswick. Three teams, including a Blackbear United U19 girls team that had several local and University of Maine players, advanced to the semifinals Monday but lost.

Virginia’s PWSI Cardinals, who beat Blackbear United 6-1, won their age group Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over PDA Wildcats from New Jersey.

The U17 boys game drew an estimated 750 fans to Bowdoin. Delco’s Steven Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal six minutes into the first half.

The U13 Terriers, a girls team based in Waterville and coached by Mark Boulier of Bangor, won the Fair Play Award in the U13 age group. Odyssey Sport of Scarborough won in the boys U12 8-on-8 age group, and the Coastal SC boys won the U12 and U16 awards.

Fair Play Awards are decided based on quality of play and excellent sportsmanship.
