Bangor man charged in knife attack Police say incident stemmed from fight with girlfriend, son

BANGOR – A Bangor man was in police custody Wednesday after he attacked three men with a knife, sending one to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

James Bell, 36, was being held on two counts of aggravated assault Wednesday night with more charges likely pending. Police said Bell stabbed the three men after a domestic dispute in Bangor at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police Lt. Tim Reid said Bell apparently got into a dispute with his live-in girlfriend and her teenage son at their State Street apartment. At some point, the teenager left the apartment and went down to the street. When he returned with two men, Bell allegedly attacked the group with a knife.

Reid said the teenager and the two men apparently were going back to the apartment to make sure the woman was all right. Reid declined to release the names of the woman, the teenager or the two other men Wednesday evening.

One man suffered a single stab wound to the back. He was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Wednesday evening, Reid said.

The teenager received stitches for a cut to the hand. The third man was slightly injured but did not require treatment. The woman suffered minor bruising during the dispute but did not need treatment, Reid said.

Bell was apprehended on site without incident.

At about 3 p.m., Bangor police officers were still interviewing people inside the apartment. The incident did not appear to disrupt businesses on the busy stretch of State Street or the Fourth of July parade downtown.

Police were still investigating the incident Wednesday evening, but Reid said more charges could be filed against Bell today after the District Attorney’s Office reviews the case.
