BANGOR – Two families with strong running traditions dominated the 27th annual Walter Hunt Memorial Fourth of July 3-kilometer road race Wednesday morning.

Ellsworth brothers Steve and Joey DeWitt finished first and second, respectively, in the men’s race while Old Town High School running standout Hilary Maxim captured the women’s race, duplicating a feat her mother, Ann (England) Maxim accomplished in the 1984 race.

The DeWitts entered the race as former coach Andy Beardsley wanted to put a team together that also included the third DeWitt brother, Corey, who graduated in June from Ellsworth High and is headed to Dartmouth College this fall.

“We just wanted to come down and see how we would do,” said Steve DeWitt, who ran his first-ever Hunt 3K.

He finished with a time of 8 minutes, 27 seconds, and was followed by Joey DeWitt, who is a top runner at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, in 8:30. Bangor High standout Riley Masters finished third in 8:39, followed by Adam Goode of Orono (8:43) and Eric McCarthy of Orono (8:47).

Maxim clocked a 10:54 to claim the women’s title and was trailed by Kristine Guaraldo (11:02) of South Portland, Molly Peverada of Hampden (11:19), Katrina Bisheimer (11:24) of Bucksport, and Shannon Horton of Trenton (11:26).

Steve DeWitt said he didn’t have a set strategy for the race and had just resumed training about six weeks ago after taking the winter off.

“I wanted to go out conservatively because I haven’t run hard for awhile,” said DeWitt, who graduated from Stanford in June 2006. “I didn’t really know what to expect. I went out with Joey and we kind of hung around coach Beardsley and Corey for the first half and then started picking people off and moving up.”

Masters led through most of the race, which started on Brewer’s Wilson Street and then crossed to Bangor over the Chamberlain Bridge. DeWitt caught and passed Masters when they were going down Main Street in Bangor with a little less than half a mile left in the race.

“I wanted to finish the race together with Joey, but I didn’t know if that was him behind me,” said DeWitt, who is staying in Ellsworth while he awaits word on an application to medical school. “I didn’t want to turn around because it was coming to the end of the race and I didn’t want to get passed.”

The DeWitt brothers do a lot of training together, but it was the first time all three had ever competed in the same race and it was the first time Corey DeWitt – a cross country and outdoor track star – had ever run a road race. He finished eighth in 8:53.

Corey DeWitt said “it was pretty cool” to compete with his brothers.

“I run with them about every day for training. We’re pretty tight knit,” he said. “We talked before the race that if they were feeling good, they were going to go for the win and if they weren’t, they were just going to run with me and coach Beardsley – so I guess they were feeling good today.”

His brothers’ success has motivated Corey DeWitt.

“Seeing the success both of them have had has just made me want it even more,” he said. “It’s been awesome watching them in college and hopefully I can have half of the success they’ve had.”

In the women’s race, Maxim used the event as a gauge of her running condition. She recently resumed training after taking two weeks off following the outdoor track season.

“I’m just getting back into things. This was to see how I could do,” said Maxim, who went through the first mile in 5:30.

She didn’t have a set strategy for the race but wanted to run hard and fast. She added that she wasn’t aware of where the other top women competitors were in the race.

“I felt really good. After the first mile I realized it was kind of faster than I was expecting,” Maxim said. “I started to cramp up a little bit, but otherwise I felt good. I liked the downhill. It was easier – faster.”

It was her second Hunt 3K as she also competed when she was 13.

Her mother, Ann, won the same race with a time of 9:59 in 1984 when she was a running standout at the University of Maine.

Ann Maxim said it was “pretty cool” to watch her daughter win the same race.

“She’s a very driven young lady,” said Maxim, UMaine’s director of academic support for student athletes. “She actually wants to beat some of my times that I ran in college. She’s really something to watch. She’s a lot of fun.”

Ann Maxim didn’t start her running career until she attended UMaine, where she was playing field hockey. She became interested in running because her brother competed in the sport at the University of Connecticut.

Hilary Maxim has taken to running at an earlier age as she was 4 when she entered a summer track program. As she got older, she wanted to keep increasing the distances of her races.

“Even as a 9-year-old she wanted to run the 3,000,” said Ann Maxim. “So I thought this is something here she likes to do and has had success.”

Hilary Maxim also played basketball until her sophomore year in high school.

“She switched over to indoor track when she started to see that there might be a [running] future for her in college, and she loved it so much,” Ann Maxim said.

RACE NOTES: Bar Harbor native Judson Cake, last year’s Hunt 3K winner, ran in the race, but his finish was unofficial as he didn’t register for the event.

A few minutes before the event, with hundreds of runners on the starting line, Cake’s friend, Evan Graves, attempted to register Cake with race director Dave Torrey, but Torrey ultimately decided that Cake could not officially enter.

“We had already closed registration a half-hour earlier. Everyone was entered into the computer,” Torrey said. “I didn’t think it was fair to other runners who had come to me earlier to try to register who I had to turn away because we were making our way to the starting line.”

Cake was even with Masters for most of the first mile before being passed by the DeWitts.
