An Old Town man is expected to appear in court later this month after spraying three people with Mace at Pickering Square in Bangor on Saturday afternoon, according to police reports.

John Wood, 39, originally called police to say that he had been assaulted by a woman and two men, but after interviewing all four people involved and a witness, Bangor police determined that Wood was at fault, the reports said.

Wood had approached the woman, claiming that she owed him $70, Bangor police Officer Gary Decker reported. Wood told police that the woman then kicked him and one of the men hit him over the head with a soda bottle. In return, Wood took out a can of Mace and sprayed all three, leaving orange marks on all of them.

The woman said she didn’t kick Wood until after he pulled out the Mace, and her story was corroborated by the two men she was with. She also said she had never borrowed money from Wood and had seen him only a couple of times.

Wood was summoned on three counts of assault and is scheduled to appear at 3rd District Court in Bangor July 18. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)
