ORONO – A local juvenile smashed the windshield of an Orono police cruiser with his head Saturday morning while police were attempting to detain him, according to Capt. Josh Ewing. Now the teen faces at least five charges.

Police were called to Colburn Drive around 7:30 a.m. by someone saying that a male had broken locks on a couple of bicycles and was checking the doors of residences to see if they were locked.

When officers arrived, they located the 16-year-old male and recognized him as someone they’d dealt with before.

“He was extremely intoxicated [and] belligerent,” Ewing said. Police also found a beer in the male’s pocket.

Police attempted to locate the teen’s guardian, but were unsuccessful. When they tried to handcuff him to take him into protective custody, he ran and had to be tackled.

In the process, he got a cut on his elbow and an ambulance crew was called to the scene to evaluate him.

An officer had the juvenile leaning on the hood of the car when the ambulance arrived, and the teen lifted his head up and banged it against the window, smashing the windshield.

On the way to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the teen threatened to get a gun and kill at least four police officers from Orono and Old Town.

He told officers that, “If nobody knew his name now, they would when he carried out his plan.”

Once he was released from the hospital, the juvenile was taken to Mountain View Juvenile Correction Facility in Charleston where he remained Monday, Ewing said.

The juvenile has been charged with terrorizing, criminal mischief, failure to submit to arrest or detention, possession of alcohol by a minor, and aggravated criminal mischief. There also may be additional charges filed, Ewing said.

The juvenile is expected to appear at a detention hearing today.
