Everyone who loves listening to The Memphis Belles will be happy to hear, as I did, from “Belle” Penny Weinstein that they are coming out of retirement to perform a benefit concert in conjunction with the New England Forestry Foundation.
The Memphis Belles, who entertain you with music from the 1940s and 1950s, are Weinstein, Pat Cummings and Darlene Mogul, and they are appearing in a benefit concert from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at The Lucerne Inn on Route 1A, Lucerne-in-Maine.
Admission is a $25 per-person, tax-deductible donation, and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres along with a cash bar.
If you cannot get to The Lucerne Inn for your tickets, you can make reservations by calling 843-5123.
Proceeds from the concert benefit the Big Hill and Second Pond Forest Reserve Project, which the brochure describes as a “magnificent, 1,600-acre parcel of unspoiled land, encompassing Second Pond and Coon Bog in Dedham/Lucerne, from development both now and in the future.”

On behalf of the sponsoring Monroe Community Church, member Alison Rector invites you to attend The Great White Elephant Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the church on Route 139 in Monroe.
Rector wrote the yard sale features household items, children’s items, furniture, books, crafts and baked goods.
Anyone who would like to rent a table for $10 may call 525-3104 for details and table reservations.
“You keep your profits from the stuff you sell,” Rector explained, “but table rental fees will benefit the Oncology Support Foundation” of CancerCare of Maine.
Simpson Memorial Library board of trustees secretary Sue Kircheis invites children ages 4 and 5 who live in Carmel, Etna and Dixmont to attend the Teddy Bear Picnic at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at the library in Carmel village.
However, parents or guardians are asked to call ahead to register the child or children attending. The library number is 848-7145.
Youngsters should “bring a blanket or beach towel to sit on, outside, and your favorite Teddy, doll or stuffed animal,” Kircheis wrote.
“Our guest performer will be well-known storyteller Jan Zimmermann, who will entertain you with stories, poetry and music.
“As this is an outside event,” Kircheis added, “children must be accompanied by an adult. In the event of rain, an inside location is available.”
Audrey Pesley of Brooksville wrote that Penobscot Days begins with breakfast and a giant yard sale at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Red Schoolhouse at the Penobscot Historical Society in that community.
