HERMON – During the school year, Hermon elementary school pupils were entertained with stories from “Moozelville Playground.” This is book No. 1 in the series called The Cookie Books.
Author Gayle Roselle attended a one-room schoolhouse in Hermon and elementary schools in Bangor, graduated from Brewer High School and finished her education at the University of Maine.
Her newly released children’s book relates the adventures of four children growing up in Hermon – renamed Moozelville – in the mid-1900s. How did children entertain themselves without television and computer games?
The Cookie Books series answers that question and takes readers to a country candy store, a horse farm, rafting on a frog pond, clamming along the Bar Harbor seashore, canoeing to Indian Island and attending the Skowhegan Fair. In addition to reading poems and singing songs, readers will shake and wiggle to the Moozelville Higgle.
How did pupils and teachers respond to the books?
Pupils said, “These are the funniest stories I have ever heard.”
“Please come back and read some more.”
“I love these stories. How can I get one of these books?”
Teachers said, “I truly enjoyed the stories. Reminded me of stories my parents and grandparents told me.”
“Very interesting and entertaining.”
“The children laughed, danced, smiled and participated when asked questions. I enjoyed them just as much as my students.”
“The children were totally engaged in the stories.”
“The stories were wonderful.”
“Very descriptive stories. Children could relate to characters.”
Roselle will read and sign her books 9 a.m. to midafternoon Saturday, July 14, at Hermon High School as part of Hermon Alumni Association events.
