AUGUSTA – A man charged in an armed standoff at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Augusta has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the April 20 incident.

Phillip Urquhart, 42, formerly of Windham, also won the right to speak to his wife, as long as he’s in custody.

Urquhart, whose address is listed as North Waterboro in court documents, is charged with placing several people in jeopardy by waving a pistol at them inside the Wal-Mart.

Urquhart entered his plea during his arraignment on charges of terrorizing, criminal threatening and reckless conduct in Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta on Tuesday. He has been held on suicide watch at the Kennebec County jail since late May.

Urquhart was arrested in York County after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase and ramming a deputy’s cruiser on May 28.

He is being held without bail pending a hearing Aug. 10 on charges he violated conditions of bail by committing new criminal conduct in York County, Assistant District Attorney Brad Grant said.

Investigators said Urquhart, apparently despondent because his wife had told him she was leaving him, wanted police to kill him.
