While the Sub 5 track club’s race series is taking a couple of weeks off after last week’s Walter Hunt Memorial 3K, the series will get back into the swing of things with a local favorite on July 28.

The Bucksport Bay Festival 5K will celebrate its 10th running this year, and the race will be held on its traditional final Saturday in July, at 8 a.m. across from the Verso Paper Fitness Center on Route 15.

The event is sponsored by the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Bucksport Family Medicine, Hannaford, and Seaboard Federal Credit Union and is run in conjunction with Bucksport’s annual Bay Festival, which runs all weekend.

Last year’s race featured runners from as far away as California, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Like the Tour du Lac 10-miler that was held in town earlier this summer, the course is runner friendly yet challenging. The first mile has a small uphill, which becomes a friendly downhill in the final mile.

A total of 110 athletes participated last year, with Matt Hougan of Bar Harbor and Lara Rand of Orrington posting wins.

Preregistration starts at 7 a.m. on race day, and fees are $8 prior to race day and $10 on race morning. The first 125 to sign up will receive a T-shirt.

Applications are available at www.sub5.com. Those seeking more information may contact Joan Merriam at 469-2019.

Upcoming events

A pair of events will be making their debuts on the Greater Bangor running scene on Saturday.

The Hermon Alumni 5K road race will be held at 10 a.m. at Hermon High School.

The race goes from Hermon High to Dysart’s Truck Stop and back.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Hermon cross country teams. Registration on race day starts at 9 a.m., and fees are $10 for students (18-under) and $15 for adults.

Checks can be made out to Hermon High School, and registration forms are available at www.sub5.com. For more information, contact Hermon cross country coach Riley Donovan at 615-1151.

In addition to the Hermon 5K, the first Newport Cultural Center 5K run and walk and 1-mile fun run will take place at 9 a.m. at 23 Water Street in downtown Newport.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Newport Cultural Center, the future home of the Newport Public Library and Historical Society.

Registration on race day kicks off at 7:30 a.m., and fees are $5 for children under 10, $10 prior to race day, and $12 on race day.

The first 100 runners to sign up will receive a T-shirt. Applications are available on www.sub5.com. For more information, contact Kelley Carter at 852-0647.

Quaglia earns scholarship

The awards just keep on coming for recent Bangor High School graduate Casey Quaglia.

The Binghamton University-bound Quaglia was awarded the Sub 5 Track Club’s College Scholarship at the Walter Hunt Memorial 3K in Bangor on July 4.

Quaglia, who finished sixth in the race, led the Rams to state titles in indoor and outdoor track and field his senior season and won individual honors at the state Class A cross country championships.

He also holds six individual state titles over the last two indoor and outdoor track seasons, and has personal-best times of 1 minute, 58 seconds in the 800 and 4:24 in the mile.
