Spay and neuter cats

In her well-written letter, “Spay and neuter” (BDN, July 7), Julie Gallagher of PAWS spoke for all of us who deal with the never-ending flow of unwanted felines in this state.

I, too, never cease to be amazed at the cruelty and irresponsibility of people. Too many view animals, especially cats, as disposable objects. Too few spay or neuter their pets, resulting in suffering or death for countless thousands all over Maine every year.

I continuously rescue animals from terrible situations. From a pair of kittens dumped in the running trash compactor at the town transfer station to a half-starved mother cat frantically trying to keep her fragile newborns alive to an abandoned older cat with a large, nasty tumor, my list of horror stories could fill this entire newspaper, as could Julie’s and most of the other animal welfare advocates that I know.

There are not enough of us to keep up with the constant demands; not enough homes to go around; never enough time or money to assist them all.

Please help by spaying and neutering your own pets or by donating to a group who will assist others.

Don’t add to the problem. Be a part of the solution.
